excerebrose
excerebrose (eks-SER-ee-bros) adjective
Brainless.
[From Latin ex- (out of) + cerebrum (brain).]
Hmm… I like this word, it’s a good way to call some stupid and not have them know it. Interesting enough the theme for this week at Wordsmith is words for insults. let’s see what the rest of the week holds. I looked at yesterdays word
potvaliant (POT-val-iant) adjective, also pot-valiant
Showing courage under the influence of drink. Such courage is also known as Dutch courage.
But it doesn’t seem very insulting. This is probably leftover from last week- living in Korea I am in the future with respects to most web sites. I call my parents on Sunday morning but for them it is Saturday night.
CALL
While reading Technology and Teaching English Language Learners I was very intrigued. This book is perfect for me as there is so much in it that I was already very fascinated by. As I was reading it my brain had a million lightnening flashes going off as to various activities that I could use in the classroom or new ideas to use with my web site that I have for my students. I was actually trying to read as fast as possible because I wanted to read more before my friends showed up at starbucks, but I also wanted to read slower for a greater comprehension. All this for the introduction.

Stephen Krashen
While look at Scott Sommers’ blog I found a link to Stephen Krashens web site. This is great because he has links to several journal articles and one book that I have wanted to read: Second Language Acquisition and Second Language Learning (1981) which you can read in HTML or as a PDF. It also appears that more books and articles will be available in the future as he also says:
QUESTION: Will other books or articles by Stephen Krashen be posted to this site?
Yes! Several items are in development and will be posted soon
I have added a link on the side-bar to Mr. Krashen’s site. Thank-you
Essay Topic
For the first essay I have 6 choices but I will probably do this one:
The past decade has given rise to a re-conceptualisation of ‘motivation’ in SLA. A number of models and frameworks have been proposed, some of which are discussed in Dornyei (1998), - see the reading package for this this Unit. Select the motivation framework or model which you believe is the most useful starting point for language teachers aiming to maximise motivation in thier learners, and justify your choice. Are there any modifications or additions that could be made to this framework? Use your chosen framework to suggest and diescuss strategies for improving/maximising motivation in a particular group of language learners with whom you are familiar. Refer to the relevant research literature throughout your paper.
Due April 21st - 3500 words +/- 10%.
In my classes I spend a lot of time working on motivation both in class and motivating students to see opportunities outside of the class, so this is a natural choice for me and of intrinsic interest.
Still waiting for the materials for my other class.
Defusing Cultural Conflicts in the Classroom
While surfing I stumbled across Downbrigade News and a link to an article on News.com.au about a peace program officer who was “hacked to death” by another participant.
The officers were attending an English language course within the framework of NATO’s Partnership for Peace program, which is aimed at increasing cooperation between neutral and former Soviet bloc nations and NATO in peacekeeping and other areas.
Guess they need to rework the framework of this peace program or else as Downbridge News suggest train thier Language teachers in Defusing Cultural Conflicts in the Classroom. Blinger sends out his condolences to the deceased’s family.
