Do as I say…

I am no longer a Do as I say, not as I do teacher. For the longest time, I’ve been recommending that my students speak English with each other outside of class; with friends or by joinging a club. I’m also a strong advocate of learner dictionaries vs bi-lingual dictionaries. Well recently I picked up the first ever Learners dictionary for Korean learners and have started using it.

I have additionally started a conversation time once a week with a foreign friend and colleague. Last Friday was our first session of one hour. It went pretty well and ended up with some English, but not as much as one would expect. Overall I’m looking forward to this time to use Korean.

I’ve still got a few things that I recommend to students, but don’t do myself as the resources are not available. There are no graded readers available for Korean learners. Yes I am aware of the nationalistic crap published by yonsei that is boring and unmotivating. What I really want to see is graded readers similar to Oxford Bookworms i.e. novels and regular fiction graded for learners, not pablum and cultural highlights that every student learns after their first 6 months in Korea.

Finally I have yet to find a good source of audio for extensive listening. There are no podcasts for Korean learners - mine failed to get off the ground, there are no audio books for Koreans and I do not enjoy Korean pop or rock music.

At least now, I am doing some of what I recommend to my students and as soon as I am able to do more, I will. I believe in leading by example where possible. How can students take teachers seriously who do not speak their native language or a second language at all. This is the best way to learn, but I can only speak English. Yeah, I believe you.
