opening hwp files in MSword

If you recieve hwp files from students you know it is impossible to open them in MSword, but if you download the free veiw from hansoft then the files will open fine in word and you can convert them to rtf or doc if you like.

After installing this you can also use msword to save the files as hwp.

*update*
The program from haansoft only allows you to view the hwp file. If you want to save a word file as hwp or open in word then you need this file which I found someplace on the net and can no longer remember, so I uploaded it to my server.

update July 5, 2006
See the comment by Genki for an alternate solution.

Updated July 1st 2005

Special Notice
This entry is one of my top search results on google & yahoo and many of you are downloading the files here. I will continue to leave the file here but all I ask in return for this file now is for you to leave a comment and let me know who you are and that you downloaded the files. Also, if you are interested why not look around and see if there is anything else of interest to you.

I don’t know if it’s poor blog etiquette to add a comment that is unrelated to the current day’s blog. Sorry if it’s not the right place to post.

I was just wondering, in reading your blog how you decided to do the MA TESOL at Macquarie.  How did you decide on that MA over all of the other options?  That’s a question I’m working on.

Julie,

Dont’ worry about leaving unrelated comments especially when you have a good question. My answer will be quite long so I will not post it here, but I will write a post about it either tomorrow or after the weekend. Friday night I have two friends from Singapore coming to visit and will be busy over the weekend. Plus Nina Spada is speaking down the street from my home on Sunday morning (yeah!)

I found a link that provides the same file you are hosting on microsoft’s webpage. You might want to link to it first to save yourself the bandwidth. Microsoft File Link

SD & Victoria,

Thank you for your comments. I have had the message requesting comments on download for about 4 months now and you are the first two to do so. It is really appreciated.

SD, the link you provided is dead, but I’ll try searching microsoft. Thanks for the tip.

I’m an exchange student, and my partners for a presentation sent me .hwp files. I’m short on time, so I’d rather not send it back and request a different version. Thanks a lot!

Unfortunately we don’t run Word 97 and this program didn’t seem to install. I am assuming it is a plug in for Word97. I shall continue looking to see if there is a version for Word2003

Did you try the Hangul Viewer for Hangul 2004 you won’t be able to edit, but will be able to read the document.

I also could not get the plugin to Work - the dialogue was in Hangul also. I’m using MS Office Word 2003.

What I successfully did was to open the file in Haansoft’s free Hangul Viewer 2002, then printed it to easyPDF, a program that creates pdf files. The resulting pdf file can used directly, or copied & pasted into Word (though some reformatting is necessary, and images must be copied & pasted individually). The easyPDF is a highly-useful program I bought for $15; a trial version is available at:
http://www.bcltechnologies.com/document/products/easypdf/easypdf.htm

Hope this helps someone!

Genki,

THanks for another work around. I think the newer versions of HWP are not compatible with this plug-in. And it looks like most people have upgraded to newer versions which means that the pdf workaround is probably the way to do it.

Thanks for leaving a comment and helping others who come here looking for a solution.

Dear EFL GEEK (or anyone else who thinks they might be able to help),

I have a question/request, which I hope you (or one of your readers) can help me with:  might you know where I can get a copy of “Hangul ‘97” (this is an “English language” version of the HWP—that is, the buttons, menus, help articles, and so forth are displayed in English, rather than in Korean).

History:  I had it installed on my machine (the disc, original and registered, was from our school’s program library); it became corrupted to the point where certain functions simply were not behaving properly anymore, and got worse after I reinstalled Windows.  I reinstalled it using the disc which our new computer science teacher gave me, and only then found out that he had given me the Korean version.  Meanwhile, the English version disc has disappeared, I suspect for good.  All of my work is based upon this HWP, and I can do nothing until I get everything back to the condition where I can read things again!

Any suggestions or help would be very greatly appreciated.  (Even better would be a copy of the disc, that I could borrow, rent, or buy:  I called the publisher as soon as the dimensions of the problem became apparent, but they said that none of the English versions are available from them any more.)

Thank you for your time, and help!  Please have a great day!

Sincerely yours,

Daniel M. Burkus

Daniel,

I’m not sure why you would use HWP and keep yourself dependant on software where you cannot use all the dialogue boxes to do what you need to do. What I would suggest is that you open your hwp files and then save as .doc or .rtf format. 다른 이름으로 저장 is under the 파일 menu - in the dialogue box change the drop down option from .hwp to either .doc or .rtf

Once you do that, you’ll be able to open them in your favorite English wordprocessor. I would guess either MSword or OpenOffice.

Good Luck

I was able to open the files in Hangul Viewer, even though it’s still version 2002.  I then pasted them into MS Word 2007 and had no problem.  I made sure to save them in Word 2003 format because (I think I read this on Wikipedia) the new versions of Hangul can read Word 2003 .doc files.

ZenKimchi,
good advice, thanks for the comment. I liked the look of your site. I have only seen a few 4 column sites, but yours pulls it off nicely. How does it look at a smaller screen resolution?

Since my home and work computers have the hangul programs needed for hwp files, my laptop does not, being from the US. The free download has now enabled me to at least view my work files during any traveling. Thank you for posting this useful tip!

How small a screen… like cell phone wink  Going fairly small in resolution does induce side scrolling.  Yet my stats show that only 4% of the site’s viewers use a resolution that would do that.

Update on my HWP findings.  It does paste, but the formatting disappears.  I should have paid closer attention.

Oh, and has anyone commented on the Immigration web site offering forms for you to print out ahead of time—in HWP format???

Because, you know, all foreigners MUST have Hangul Wordpower.

There is also Nethangul, which is a fully functional Hangul 2000SE on the internet.  You pay by the day.  The trouble is that to register, you need a residence ID number.  I haven’t gotten my Alien Registration number to work on it.  Here’s the web site:

Zen,
I thought immigration also had them as PDF, but yeah it’s pretty short sited to expect foreigners to have hwp. The web version sounds interesting, but why a Korean would use that when google apps are free and on the web is beyond me. I’m pretty sure the google apps have been translated as well. oh well, we all know it’s about nationalism anyhow.

Hello,

Thank you for making this download available to us.  Last time I downloaded the viewer program I just got a Korean friend to find it for me on Naver.  Left the teaching scene in Korea last year.  Can anyone tell me how things are going in Seoul, particularly with English teaching?  I’m dying to know.

Regards,

Asa

I got a .hwp document today and I googled hwp. I found this website very helpful. It led me to a free online document service called ThinkFree. It is owned by the company that created the hwp format. After you create a free account, you can upload and view hwp format files. I found it quite useful…

Thanks for providing ‘translation’ assistance to this ESL instructor!  My students only submit hard copies, but I got a file from a Korean friend today which had the ‘hwp’ tag and my computer had no idea what to do with it.
