I have the idioms book in the series also (관용어) and it is also excellent. You can’t go wrong with any of these books, they are the first books as far as I’m aware that cover idioms and proverbs in any amount of depth for learners of Korean. As I mentioned they’re most effective if you have a Korean friend or a teacher to go through the book with and do the practice sections.

If you want Dr. Arguelles to do an update/revision of his book, please contact the publisher (Hollym) and express your interest. Dr. Arguelles himself suggested we do that after I wrote him inquiring about a new edition. If Hollym gets enough interest then hopefully they will commission a revised book. (I emailed them from their web site.)

I have both of the books the previous poster mentioned and I second that Using Korean is an absolute must for any Korean learner. However, I really like the grammar book and use it quite often. It’s all in Korean but the explanations are kind of dumbed down for non-native Korean speakers. It takes a little bit to get used to it but it’s most complete Korean grammar reference I’ve seen. On the other hand, I looked at the first volume of the grammar book and found it incomprehensible. Just buy the second volume. I have more Korean book recommendations on my website.

Would Dr. Arguelles’ book be a good choice for a “low intermediate” learner? It’s a little pricey so I don’t want to buy it if it’s stays at the beginning level. On the other hand, the fact that it has info about the Korean language in North Korea (something I have no knowledge about) and that it teaches some hanja (which none of my general Korean textbooks cover) has me intrigued. Any recommendations? Advice much appreciated.

Jérôme, to a degree I agree with you. Actually looking back at what I wrote I gave Roadmap to Korean far too much credit. I found it interesting when I first read it, when I myself was a new language learner, but looking back I don’t like the way it treats almost every aspect of Korean like it is crazily difficult/almost impossible.

Also for the size of the book the depth it goes into is very shallow. I only noticed this after reading Using Korean and discovering Richard Harris’s book is anything but comprehensive. I look forward to the review if you can manage ot read it again, in the mean time I’m sure you’ll be a lot happier if you pick up Using Korean to read also.

It does sound interesting and I’m going to order it but I first have to completely disagree with you on the usefulness of “Roadmap to Korean”. I think it’s one of the worst book I ever read on learning a language : it’s so full of wrong assumptions and plain mistakes, I have trouble believing it has been proofread.

I have planned to write an article to warn my readers about this book but the thought of having to read it again makes me cringe…
