I was hoping I could test at level 6 (the top), but only in reading and maybe in vocabulary. The writing and speaking sections I can’t understand the vocabulary. I blame this on self-study and reading a lot, which fails to teach me the spoken language. The truth is, the writing sections are not normal written korean, they include the normally spoken korean in textual form, so they present a strange mixture of written Korean and spoken Korean. I really do have to shell out for a hakwon, to expose myself to this higher level of spoken language, but I’m still fighting off the urge. I can still translate and, maybe, even though I don’t really believe it, I can console myself with the fact that I can read and know hanja. But, the test is difficult at level 6, there are (1) proverbs 속담 and (2) questions about slight differences among spoken adverbs, which you have to have a K explain to you, and which you can’t grasp from the dictionary alone, as they are so similar in meaning, and (3) very rare spoken grammar. All this leads me to believe that getting a 6 on this test is going to require hakwon or classroom study geared for test preparation or teaching of advanced conversation structures.

Overally, my study method of teaching myself by reading difficult texts using a dictionary and editing the dictionary on my website has now reached the point of diminishing returns.

The test is a good something to qualify your korean ability. I recommend it, even to 제임스 who is against standardized tests. You cannot change the values of the world, so even I am going to bite the bullet. How else can I prove my ability when I apply for translation??? I can’t speak very well, it stumbles out on many occassions, so I am in need of something more. Actually, I’m scared I’ll fail miserably. I’m content thinking I’m a genius, as they say, ignorance is bliss. I may test in at level 4 and have to get completely wasted.

Joseph,

So far with Lang-8 I’ve been writing Entries in my journal requesting help with writing the transcripts, then all my Korean friends see them and help. To help me out like this you’ll need to become my friend on lang-8 so you can see when I request help. The group name is ‘한국어 원어민 되기 프로젝트’ but as it’s ended up I don’t use the group as people as people reply much faster when I write a journal entry. BTW this Lang-8 thing is very good for getting native speakers to proof-read your Korean, I suggest you give it a try by writing a diary entry and you’ll see how you get a response usually in a few minutes. My username is ‘jjmountain’

When is your listening blog going to be back online? why did you take it down? ㅠ.ㅠ oh and cheers for the html tutorial!

James,
You did the lilnking correctly, but for some reason there was an extra quote and it broke it.

YOu can manually add links using html (Joesp’s link looks like a good tutorial) or using the button in the editor which uses textile formating. Eithere way will render correctly.

I fixed your link.

I can say it’s a labor of love for me, doesn’t have anything to do with money. At least, not online educational korean webmastering.

if you are a webmaster and want a dictionary on your site, it’s probably your only option. I imagine it will have great use in automated translation projects, etc. You can install just the search box from ezcorean’s right side and the popup will contain search results. It’s not as good as naver dictionary yet, but it’s gotten to the point that it’s well usable (except for advanced advanced words like from literature) ...

The admin mode editing on ezcorean.com makes mass editing/deleting/making of examples/changing definitions easy .... making a dictionary is hard work, the words just never end.

good luck everybody! I really just want to help! I may have said this already, but it is the only opensource korean-english dictionary available anywere AFAIK and I’ve looked for many years (else, why would I have gone to so much trouble?)
